Tax Tips General

Q: Should I file a tax return even if I am not required to file?

A: If you had withholding on your wages, you should file to obtain an income tax refund. The refund will not be sent unless you file.

Q: Should I file my tax return by the due date even though I can’t pay the entire balance due?

A: Yes, file the return and pay whatever you can. The penalty for late payment is only 1/2% per month, while the penalty for late filing is 5% per month.

Q: Are my children under 14 required to file an income tax return?

A: If they have at least $1 of unearned income, such as dividends or interest, and their total income exceeds $700, they must file. If they have only earned income, they must file if that amount exceeds $4,300.

Q: Can I report my child’s income on my return?

A: If your child's only source of income is from interest and dividends, and the total income is between $700 and $7,000, and they are under age 14, you can generally include their income on your return.

Q: Am I liable for a spouse’s (or former spouse’s) federal tax liability?

A: If you file a joint return, under certain circumstances you may not be liable.
